Building Community through Understanding
Understanding Islam and Building Community
Inter-Faith Dinner Gathering
Members of both the Islamic and Christian Faiths, from the Brookfield Masjid and the First Congregational Church, gathered together again for a time of fellowship, community engagement, and understanding—beginning with devotions and continuing during and after dinner with interactive discussions of universal topics.
All members of FCC are enthusiastically welcome to participate in this important time of partnership and fellowship. The Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee is also supporting this community program, including its introduction to all attendees of a special, State Department-sponsored, international spiritual delegation, also participating.
“Community Through Understanding” ~ An Invitation to the Sikh Gurdwara
We were invited to the Sikh Temple in Brookfield for a special time of outreach, education, and fellowship. This visit included observation of regular Sunday morning/afternoon worship, a time of informal conversation over a traditional Langar meal, a tour of the facility, and opportunities to ask questions.
Educational materials and reference items about both the Sikh and the Islamic religions, following up on our interfaith educational sessions, are available along the south wall of the church library.
Understanding Islam & Building Community
Held in 2016
A three-person panel from the Islamic Society of Milwaukee will discuss Islam – its history, its beliefs, and the role of women – at “Understanding Islam.” The event will take place Sunday, October 9, at 3:00-4:30 pm in the sanctuary. The event is designed to answer common questions Christians share about Islam. Knowing more about the Muslim faith will help us all better navigate our increasingly pluralistic society. Ahmed Quereshi, president of the Islamic Society Board of Directors, will lead the panel. He will be joined by two others from the Society’s leadership team who can provide further insights into Milwaukee’s Muslim community.
Presentations used during the discussion:
Islam and Interfaith Relations: From Fear to Friendship – Ahmed Quereshi
Islam – Foundations and Basics – Noman Hussain
Women In Islam – Zehra Tahir
