On June 18th, nine adults and sixteen teens traveled to Appalachia with the goal of making homes in the area warmer, safer, and drier with the desire to share the love of Christ. Not only did the team accomplish these goals during their one week stay, but they also learned they had many other gifts to share with each other and the people of Salyersville, KY.
The teens displayed excellent leadership in their care and compassion to the family they served. Many opportunities were presented to grow in faith and to share talents and skills that were critical to this successful week. With guitar and ukulele playing, robust singing, devotions and jobsite leadership paired with a general team spirit of working together as one, all participants were able to contribute their God-given abilities.
This is the first year all the teams were placed on the same job site. Although it was hot, and sometimes a little overcrowded, the work that was accomplished in a very short period of time was admirable. The homeowner, a disabled elderly man, now has a long, sturdy wheel chair ramp, insulation and the start of a room addition to the tight quarters he and his family live in. The major improvement in his and his families' quality of life is astonishing - thanks to our generous donors, our church family and the team.
One of the great things about being in this region is there is a large cultural heritage of art and music in this area. The team was treated to a singer/guitarist/song-writer right on the jobsite as well as a well-known artist/storyteller who joined us on culture night.
There is so much to do in this region and the need for basic home repair can be overwhelming. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to use additional money to replace trailer doors in a few homes and also help with a room addition that ASP did not have the funds for.
We hope you will join us on October 9th as the team recounts their experience.
