Minister: Jesus began his ministry to the world, led by the Spirit into the wilderness.
People: As we begin our Lenten journey, let us be led by the Spirit, even into the uncomfortable places.
Minister: In those forty days, and in that place, Jesus was faced with hunger, doubt and temptation.
People: As we seek to follow Jesus, we would be led, even into the uncomfortable choices.
Minister: Jesus left the wilderness, faithful and obedient to God, rejoicing in the One in whom he trusted.
People: As we continue on our path to faithfulness, we will be led by our Christ, rejoicing in the Lord our God.
*HYMN 9 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven
*THE PRAYER OF THE DAY and THE LORD’S PRAYER (unison)
Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, but did not sin. Give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, just as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*THE RESPONSE Teach Me, O Lord, the Way of Thy Statues
Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statues, And I shall keep it unto the end.

THE PSALMODY Psalm 91 sung to Eventide
[Children ages 3 through 8th grade are dismissed to Sunday School during the Psalmody.]
Deep in the shelter of the Lord I dwell, Since I have made the Lord my dwelling place,
And in the shadow of God’s love abide; Home of my care and harbor for my praise;
No pestilence or snare will me assail, Great hosts of angels, messengers of grace,
When God Almighty watches at my side. God sends to keep me safe in all my ways.
Beneath God’s hov’ring wings I rest secure, “For I, the Lord, have bound you safe in love,
With calm assurance that my help is near; You need not fear, I will your rescue be;”
God’s loving-kindness my protection sure, Since Thou, O Lord, from danger me remove,
And e’er attends to banish all my fear. My song shall be Thy praise eternally.
